HBD International Client, DENSO, Wins C. Everett Koop National Health Award 2022

HBD International is proud to announce that DENSO – a HBD client of over five years – has been announced as the winner of the 2022 C. Everett Koop National Health Award for efforts to promote a culture of health within the workplace. The prestigious award – named for Charles Everett Koop, the 13th Surgeon General of the United States and a significant public health administrator in the 20th century – recognizes outstanding worksite health promotion and improvement programs. More specifically, the award acknowledges organizations that are able to document and verify their results, both in terms of health improvement and positive economic impact.

DENSO's Koop Award Trophy

DENSO, a leading mobility supplier, received the award for their updated ‘Healthy Horizons’ program – an innovative mix of small group contact during team meetings and one-on-one coaching onsite where people work, which has eliminated the proactive opt-in barrier as well as time barriers that typically limit participation in worksite health and wellbeing programs.

A panel of twelve reviewers evaluated the DENSO program and found it to have extremely high, meaningful participation (93% annual average) and coaching rates (76%) as well as impressive health outcomes. The program yielded significant health risk reduction across the employee population, with improvements in measures of blood pressure, cholesterol, physical activity, diet, sleep, social support, tobacco use, and alcohol consumption. Other noteworthy accomplishments from the DENSO program include:

  • Negative medical cost trend across the group, resulting in a positive ROI.

  • Tailored programs to fit work-culture, promoted and supported by leadership teams.

  • The unique focus and addition of neuroscience to the program, offering effective ways to respond to stress.

“We are honored to be recognized with this award,” said Marty Deschenes, President of DENSO’s manufacturing facility in Athens, Tennessee, one of several DENSO plants in the U.S. participating in the program. “This award represents the high level of engagement and effectiveness of our program and the ongoing commitment to the health and wellbeing of all our team members.”
